We added that to the Hacker News site guidelines a few years ago: Please respond to the strongest plausible interpretation of what someone says, not a weaker one that's easier to criticize. Assume good faith.
Before that, I used to write about the principle of charity quite a bit: https://hn.algolia.com/?sort=byDate&dateRange=all&type=comme.... But eventually stopped using that name so much because it can be a bit confusing to people who haven't heard it before. It's shorter to just quote the guideline.
