Smalltalk can be described concisely as a graphical UNIX: a small set of computational mechanisms, designed to be general and interoperate for the construction of larger systems. Unfortunately, the GUI industry was inspired but never decided to use smalltalk itself as its foundation since C/UNIX already existed, providing higher performance for the hardware available at the time.
