I think what makes it harder with social movements is that they’re often rooted in anger. I’m sure “fund social programs” would have a wider appeal than “de-fund the police” (which is sort of two sides of the same coin), but people are angry at the police so that’s where the focus is.

I think getting through that anger and encouraging people to find a positive and affirmative way to express the same sentiment is an extremely difficult task, and really asking a lot of people.
