I imagine you're well aware of the DreamHost debacle around their own home-grown billing engine! Looking back I'm amazed at how easily companies got off the ground by hiring eager (but exceptionally green) young web devs to write sensitive code for ordering/sign-up, recurring billing, and more.

Well, it was my own company with 2 other folks. There was no reasonable alternative in 2001, really.
