Ask HN: Why is Gmail not filtering out a phishing scam known since 2020?

Just got a phishing email from hulu@hulumail.com. A quick search reveals that this phishing attempt has been well known since at least 2020. How is Gmail not catching this?

I get all kinds of obvious spammy/dodgy emails in my gmail these days. Maybe one a week or something. Ones where you can't believe it didn't go in the spam folder automatically! Never got any before the last couple of years. I've seen the problem mentioned frequently on here in the last couple of years. Something evidently went very wrong with the gmail spam filter, and was never fixed. Yours is a slightly different issue, but I wouldn't be surprised at anything not being filtered out anymore.

Google probably should have caught this one, especially if it's an older scam on a pretty big company like Hulu.

That said, I don't know if it's reasonable to think there's some process that will catch 100% of the billions of spam emails out there without also blocking an unacceptable number of legitimate emails.

I get them too. Much more than years before but not only Gmail but yahoo, Microsoft...

I think to me it's obvious. Now that they are generating good reve ue from targeting ads based on email content. They want the high visitation rate by making you interact with your email more.

Just IMHO.
