PowerPC was pretty great for a while. Then Motorola and IBM started dropped the ball (or rather, stopped putting resources into what was not a particularly big customer) and Apple switched away.


Wasn't Apple part of the PowerPC alliance?


They were, but Motorola and IBM designed and manufactured the CPUs. Apple presumably had some input, and they designed hardware platforms for the alliance, and of course software.
