I long ago learned that effective public wifi means a VPN over SSL/443.
My concern is that this knowledge -- about VPN's, much of the "for dummies" versions using 443 -- is becoming mainstream. Whereupon there will be further escalation.
(As long as it was a niche, it was missed or ignored by many "public wifi" providers.)
