If you get yourself into a position where you have servers deployed on version x.y of whatever Linux distribution you went with and now can't or won't upgrade from that, the vast majority of the time you're going to be exactly as stuck as if you were on FreeBSD. If you wanted to benefit from paid RedHat backports you had to decide to deploy your application to LTS RedHat on day 1, and the vast majority of people don't.
