This may very well have been an excellent piece. But, the author lost me no later than 2 sentences in with his immature and sexist "nerdy girl" analogy. I just didn't even bother to read the rest. Working in silicon valley myself, I already waste enough time on people who think this kind of immature male mindset is okay.

That is a reference to a trope in movies where the "nerdy girl" takes off her glasses and suddenly everyone realizes she's beautiful AND smart!

"She's All That" is a prominent example.

That is a shallow and inaccurate assessment of what's one the best articles that's been posted in the past month.

Sexism is a problem in the tech world, but I think some people also just love to be offended. Bill Burr calls it being 'professionally outraged'.

How do you know sexism is a particular problem in the tech world? Unequal representation of some particular demographic group is not sufficient evidence for discrimination.

How about "by paying attention."

Actually, like I said, I didn't even read the rest... so it wasn't an assessment on the article at all. It was an assessment of the author.

But here's a job tip: Don't talk about women like this. If you get a job, you will actually have to work with some. Also this level of immaturity will make your job search that much harder.

I don't think that was intended as a sexist remark at all. Rather, it was a pointed jest at the Hollywood trope of "nerdy girls"—basically making fun of Hollywood for being sexist.

This is totally right - I mean absolutely no endorsement of said sexism!

Well, then you missed out on the date rape joke halfway through. Unnecessary additions to an otherwise good article.

I was about to reply "nonono it's not a date rape joke" but then I realised that the word "violent" in "violent sexual abuse" means it actually could easily be taken as one. I only meant to joke about receiving unpleasant messages on a dating site, which is probably not fun, but I think is generally OK to joke about. On the other hand, date rape is not OK to joke about. I've changed "violent" to "aggressive", which I think keeps the same tone I was going for but removes the ambiguity.

One of the many downsides of the "sexism in tech" scare is the growth of hypersensitive white-knighting.

Romance is the most commonly used metaphor in the history of the English language. I suggest you avoid Shakespeare.
