Plenty of architectures do not trap at null-pointer dereferencing (they don't have traps). Some (like AVR) are not arcane, they are one of the best excuses for still writing C nowadays.


Just because a improvement is not applicable to all situations does not mean that is should not be pursued.


Arcane in the context of the blog post might mean non-86* and non-ARM.

AVR developed by Atmel in 1996, you might agree, is less-well known than the above.
